After completing the MSCE at University of Washington in 1963, David Townsend Thomas began his career with Albert Kelly & Associates in Seattle. He spent three years in the Naval Civilian Engineering Corps, stationed first in Adak, Alaska and then in Long Beach, California. Returning to KPFF in 1966, Dave became licensed in 1967 and received his structural license in 1969. He recalls a nursing home in Seattle's Northgate area as his first major design project, working with Al Kelly: "I recall it as one of the earliest prestressed, precast buildings in Seattle."

Among his projects: 1201 Third Avenue Building, Key Tower, the Stouffer Madison Hotel, the Fourth and Blanchard Building, First Interstate Center, Metropolitan Plaza, Second & Columbia Building, Duwamish Office Park in Seattle; Village Plaza, Tacoma. He also designed the total pole foundation for the Oaska World's Fair in Japan.
