Randolf G. Martens - SEAW Seattle President 1977. May 15, 1932 - June 25, 2014
Born in Eden, Idaho, Randolf "Randy" Martens received his BSCE from the University of Idaho and his MSCE from the University of Washington.
Early in his career Randy worked with the Idaho firm of E. B. Steele, spending 2-1/2 years in Afghanistan on a project to help build roadway structures and pave a route between Kabul and the Khyber Pass. He later taught engineering at Kabul University. He and his family returned to the US in 1963, and Randy pursued additional UW studies in math and aeronautical engineering.
In 1965 he took a position with Peter Hostmark Engineering, and in 1969 became head of the firm, in partnership with Bill Chan. Martens/Chan engineered structures including Group Health Central and Eastside, Ballard High School, Evergreen College, and North Seattle Community College. In 2005, Martens/Chan merged with Tacoma-based AHBL.
In addition to his service as SEAW Seattle President in 1977, Randy also served as President of the Consulting Engineers Council of Washington.
