Vern Anderson - February 15, 1934 - March 10, 2012
Vernon Leroy Anderson lived most of his life within five miles of the land his grandfather had settled on Green Valley Road, Mabton. In his youth he took part in 4-H and Future Farmers of America.
He received a BS in Agricultural Engineering from Washington State College, serving as a officer of the WSC class of 1956. During his college years he also served in the Army ROTC and later in the Army Reserves.
Vern worked with the Bureau of Reclamation and with Collier Carbon and Chemical Corporation prior to starting Anderson Engineering in 1971. He worked as a consulting engineer for the rest of his life, and also as the engineer for the Sunnyside Port District. He held licenses as a civil and agricultural engineer in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho.
Vern's work included agricultural, civil, and structural engineering for many projects, including metal buildings, potato storage facilities, and industrial facilities.
In his active community life, Vern held leadership positions in the Sunnyside United Methodist Church, Elks, Masons, Rotary, and Lower Valley Squares. A founding member of SEAW South Central Chapter, he also held membership in Shriners, the American Society of Agricultural Engineers, and Lower Valley Golf Club. During his life he attended almost all SEAW local chapter meetings.
Vern's daughter Jill Shuttleworth pursues a career in structural engineering, also taking an active leadership role in SEAW South Central Chapter.
